The first two songs on the queue when I turned to iTunes DJ in the Playlist section of my iTunes were “Peace Man” by Bamboo and “Balita” by Asin. Both songs are insightful, especially “Balita”.
The Balita was revived and remixed by the hiphop group Gloc-9. Below are the lyrics of both the original and the revival remix of the song.
I translated them in English for those who do not understand Tagalog. Some part of my translation may be shoddy; if you see some, please suggest a better one.
Balita
by Asin
Chorus:
Lapit mga kaibigan at makinig kayo
ako’y may dala dalang balita galing sa bayan ko
nais kong ipamahagi ang mga kwento at
ang mga pangyayaring nagaganap sa lupang ipinangako
I
Ang lupang pinanggalingan ko’y may bahid ng dugo
may mga lorong di makalipad nasa hawlang ginto
may mga puno walang dahon
mga pusong di makakibo
sa mga pangyayaring nagaganap sa lupang ipinangako
II

Balita (news)
by Asin
Chorus:
Come near friends and listen
I have a news from my town
I’d like to share stories
and events happening on the promise land [Mindanao, one of the three major islands of the Philippines]
I
The land where I was born has a tinge of blood
There are parrots that cannot fly inside the golden cage
Trees without leaves
Heart that cannot speak
Because of the happenings in the promise land
II
Since I become aware of this land
I have also seen the small fire in the heart of men
Fueled by corruption until it grows
Now, the hearts in the promise land have fear
(Repeat chorus)
III
Before, the rice fields were golden
The birds were as free as men
There were peace
And music that made innocent children sleep
IV
Now, the promise land is beseeching
For you to drop a tear on the flame in the heart
Hear the cries of the heart
of the man whom you’ll first feel who is a part of you
V
(same as I)

LAPIT MGA KAIBIGAN AT MAKINIG KAYO
AKO’Y MAY DALA DALANG BALITA GALING SA BAYAN KO
NAIS KONG IPAMAHAGI ANG MGA KWENTO
AT MGA PANGYAYARING NAGAGANAP SA LUPANG PINANGAKO.
AKO AY PILIPINO SA ISIP AT SA GAWA
NGUNIT BAKIT MGA PINUNO PURO LAMANG SALITA
ISANG GOBYERNO NA KAYANG SIKMURAIN AT MAGTAWANAN
MAY PAMILYANG KUMAKAIN NA KULANG SA DALAWANG
BESES SA ISANG ARAW MINSAN WALA PANG PANG LUGAW
BAKIT GANITO KABABAW ISANG PAGKAING NILANGAW
ANG DADAMPUTIN AT KAKAININ NG BATANG GUTOM
ALAM BA NG MGA HUSGADO AT LAHAT NG HUKOM
NA MERONG MAS MASAHOL PA SA HATOL NA KAMATAYAN
YAN AY IKA’Y MAGING MAHIRAP SA SARILI MONG BAYAN
MGA BATA NA ANG DAPAT NA GINAGAWA’Y MAGLARO
BAGKUS AY AGOS NG PAWIS AT MAGBANAT NG BUTO
UPANG KUMITA NG ILANG PIRASONG PISONG MADUNGIS
KALYO SA KAMAY AT PAA NA MANHID SA MATULIS
HINDI MANIKA ANG HAWAK NG KANYANG MUMUNTING BRASO
BAGKUS ISANG TAONG GULANG NYANG KAPATID AT MAY BASO SA HARAPAN
NA NAGBABAKASAKALING LAGYAN BARYANG PAMBILI NG TINAPAY NA PANG LAMAN SA TIYAN
MGA PINUNONG BAGO MAMATAY AT MAGKASAKIT
SA SARAP NG BUHAY SAKIN KAYO AY MAKINIG.
DUUL MGA KAIGSUUNAN UGPAMI NAW KAMO
DUNA KOY DALA NGA MGA BALITA GIKAN SA BANWA KO
GUSTO KO NGA IPAHIBALO ANG MGA ISTORYA
NA NAGA GAHITABO SA BANWA GISAAD NA TO
MGA BAKAL NA DUMUDURA NG APOY AT NG TINGGA
TANGAN TANGAN AT BALOT NAKASUOT NG PANG DIGMA
BAKIT DI MAPAG TUGMA ANG MAYAMAN AT DUKHA
SA PANANAW ANG KAPALIT AY HAPIS AT PAG LULUKSA
PARE-PAREHONG SUNDALO MUSLIM MAN O KRISTYANO
ILAN MAN ANG MASAWI DI MO ALAM SINONG PANALO
WALANG PANALO DAHIL SA HULI TAYO ANG TALO
PINOY ANG NASA LOOB NG ATAUL NA SINARADO
YAN BA TALAGA ANG SUMPA DITO SA LUPANG
PINANGAKO RESPETO’T PAGMAMAHALAN AY PILIT NA TINATAGO
LAWIN HINDI MAKA DAPO MAY PAKPAK NA LIMITADO
AT NAKA KULONG SA SELDANG MAY WALANG SUSING KANDADO

Balita (revival remix)
by Gloc-9
Come near friends and listen
I have a news from my town
I’d like to share stories
and events happening on the promise land [Mindanao, one of the three major islands of the Philippines]
I am a Filipino in mind and in work
But why the leaders don’t keep promises
A government that can be indifferent and can guffaw
to a family which eats only once a day
and sometimes doesn’t have even a rice porridge
Why is this so absurd that a hungry child eats spoiled food
Do all the justices and judges know that being deprived
in your own country is worse than the death penalty
Children who should have been playing but instead
sweating from working hard to earn smudged coins
Callous on their hands and feet made them numb from pointed objects
It is not a doll which a one-year old child’s small hands are holding
but a cup in front of her hoping for alms to buy bread
To the leaders, before you get sick and die of your pleasurable life,
listen to me
Come near friends and listen
I have a news from my town
I’d like to share stories
and events happening on the promise land [Mindanao, one of the three major islands of the Philippines]
Metals that spit fire and lead
is held by one who wears war uniform
Why the rich and poor cannot be joined together
In opinion, th result is despair and mourning
All are soldiers whether muslims or christians
Even how many die, the victor cannot be known
Nobody wins because at the end we all are the losers
The one in the closed casket is a Filipino
Is that really the curse here on the promise land
Respect and love are being hidden insistently
A hawk with bridled wings cannot alight
and incarcerated in a prison cell with a keyless lock
When will the stream of blood end
and the peace can be held wholly
Is that the story or the question
that is jostling insistently
to each person part of the knitted flag
Come near friends and listen…
